Job Purpose

The Volunteer Engagement (VE) team manages the enterprise infrastructure and strategy to recruit, support and engage volunteers in the work of ALSAC/St. Jude.  This team establishes standards, provides guidance and facilitates the ALSAC volunteer experience as volunteers participate in the enterprise.  To enable a positive volunteer experience for both the supervisor and individual volunteer, VE develops policy, provides training, assesses volunteer needs, promotes recruitment, manages recognition, analyzes volunteer satisfaction and offers a technology tool--the volunteer management system. Each year, ALSAC engages tens of thousands of volunteers who provide time, talent and fundraise for the organization through 31,000 events and activities in communities across the U.S.  The cultivation and increased engagement of these volunteers multiplies the reach of ALSAC, and increases organizational efficiency and effectiveness.


ALSAC’s regional offices engage with the large majority of the organization’s volunteers, and the organization is making strides to increase capacity through enhanced volunteer programming and engagement, particularly in local regions.  Infrastructure, resources and tools provided by the Volunteer Engagement team facilitate those efforts.

VE seeks a Director to provide leadership over several areas of the division: policy, culture, training, field support, assessment and technology utilization. In particular, this position has direct oversight of how the actions and opportunities for organizational volunteerism are framed and how the staff and volunteers who support and manage those volunteers are prepared, advised, governed and trained on the organization’s volunteer engagement policies and procedures. The Director and his or her team advises departments and field offices on organizational expectations and protocols around volunteers, as well as provides subject matter expertise to field teams, program leads and departments around volunteer engagement.  This role is strategic and solution-oriented in that it both provides guidance to enterprise departments as well as field teams, and surfaces trends, opportunities and needs from the enterprise and the field. 

In order to accomplish business objectives, the Director will work across the enterprise, collaborating with 33 local offices within 18 regions as well as national ALSAC business units.  On a day-to-day basis, the Director will lead a growing team of 2 staff members.  It is expected that the Director will lead by example and actively include volunteers in the work of the Volunteer Program Operations team. 





  • Requires familiarity with volunteer program management, policy development, governance and training, including experience with volunteer management systems.
  • A background in analysis, marketing, organizational culture, and/or volunteer utilization is a plus. 
  • Strong management skills, ability to speak and write in a clear and understandable manner for internal/external relations.
  • Understand extremely complex verbal or written instructions.
  • Understand data processing applications.
  • comfort with technology (webinars, conference calls, smartphones, etc.) must possess excellent diplomacy skills.
  • Knowledge ordinarily acquired through Bachelor's Degree and Master’s Degree plus 8+ years of progressive experience in program management and implementation including previous experience through levels of progressive management responsibility including supervision, budgeting, strategic planning, organizational development, cost control, resource allocation, etc.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
